Evidence-Based Resources for GPs

The Irish College of GPs has compiled some useful evidence-based resources. Please browse through the content below, or use the "On This Page" module on the left to jump to a particular resource.

Databases and Clinical Tools

There are several reference databases and clinical tools available online for free. Click on the links to search the specified database. See tips and online training tutorials for each database to get the most from each site.

Provided by the National Library of Medicine, this reference database dates back to 1966. It comprises more than 36 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.

    TIPS for using PubMed

    • Use the Limits and History features to narrow your searches.
    • Use the MeSH database to find the actual term you are searching for.
    • Use the Boolean Operators, AND, OR, and NOT, in capitals to combine terms.

    PubMed Online Training

Free access in the Republic of Ireland funded by the HSE Health Library Ireland. Ranked one of the best clinical decision support tools for health professionals worldwide. BMJ Best Practice provides step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

TIPS for using BMJ Best Practice

    • Set up your free user profile and download the app to start tracking CPD/CME points.
    • Use the Comorbidities Manager to provide fast access to the latest clinical guidance on the treatment of a patient's acute condition alongside their pre-existing comorbidities.
    • Use the Patient Information Leaflets to provide concise easy to read summaries for your patients.
This is an excellent site for evidence-based medicine information. A medical database to find high quality clinical research evidence.

TIPS for using the TRIP database

    • Using only one term can bring back a large number of results, so think of additional terms to help qualify the search e.g. asthma and steroids.
    • Use PICO to help frame your search.
    • On the results page you can filter your results based on an evidence-based medicine hierarchy e.g. guidelines, evidence-based synopses, systematic reviews. Use the 'Filter by' function on the right-hand side of the screen.
    • It automatically searches Medline for you and displays the results.
    • It searches the "Big 4" i.e. JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet and BMJ.
The Cochrane Library is a collection of high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making, including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Free access in the Republic of Ireland funded by the Health Research Board (HRB).

TIPS for using The Cochrane Library

    • Look for the Plain Language Summary for a short summary in an easy-to-read format.
    • When you have located articles use the PDF option to Print as it retains the formatting.
    • Be aware that some of the articles can be 70 pages long.
