The International Medical Graduate (IMG) Rural GP Programme is a great opportunity for experienced GPs to work in Ireland and gain a professional GP qualification. This programme is an important component of the multifaceted Irish College of GPs response to the GP workforce deficit in Ireland, especially in rural Ireland.
The Irish College of GPs IMG Rural Programme will soon travel to Johannesburg, South Africa. The IMG Rural Programme team would love to meet experienced GPs in person at the GP Expo in Johannesburg on the 5th and 6th of March 2025. Registration is FREE for attendees and further information is available via GP Expo.
The IMG Rural GP programme enables experienced IMG GPs to work in routine, daytime rural GP practice for two years, with some GP out-of-hours work. The Irish College of GPs provides a comprehensive education programme. GPs have access to substantial ongoing supports from the programme team and their host GP practice through continuous clinical mentorship.
Experienced GPs from across the globe are currently practising and living in towns and villages across Ireland. This initiative is resourced by Ireland’s Health Service Executive, and supported by the medical indemnity organisations and the Irish Medical Council. This initiative saw the first cohort of IMG GPs embarking on a 2-year journey of self-directed learning and supervised practice in February 2023. The programme recently reached a significant milestone, with the first three IMG GPs successfully completing the programme, achieving MICGP and gaining specialist registration with the Irish Medical Council.
